How Picture Discs Work
How do you get photos onto a vinyl record?
Your photos are printed and sealed between two pieces of clear vinyl, and then the grooves are lathe-cut into the disc exactly like any other record we make. It's not a sticker or a printed coating... the image is inside the record itself, visible on both sides, and the record plays right over it.
Do the photos affect the sound quality?
Not at all. The photo sits underneath the playing surface, sealed inside the record, so the stylus only ever touches clear vinyl. A picture disc from us plays exactly like our black and color records.
Do picture discs actually play, or are they just for display?
They actually play. Any standard turntable, 33⅓ RPM, up to 20 minutes of music per side. Most people display them between listens, which is the point... it's the one record format that works face-out on a shelf.
Will the photos scratch off or fade?
They can't. The image is sealed inside the record, between the two layers of vinyl, so it isn't exposed to the stylus, your fingers, or anything else. It'll look the same on the hundredth play as it did on the first.
Designing Yours
What kind of photos look best on a picture disc?
Remember you're designing a circle with a hole in the middle. Photos with the subject centered (or deliberately off-center, away from the spindle hole) work best, and bright, high-contrast images pop more than dark or busy ones. High resolution matters too, since the image prints at 12 inches across. The editor shows you exactly how the crop lands before you order.
Can I put different photos on Side A and Side B?
Yes, each side is designed separately. A popular move: one person's photo per side, or "then" on Side A and "now" on Side B.
Can I make a collage or add text on the disc?
Collages, yes — the editor supports multiple photos per side. Text is possible too, but we don't really recommend it: the image sits underneath the clear, grooved playing surface, and small text can get hard to read through the grooves. If you want words on the record, make them big and bold, or put them on the covers where they'll always be crisp.
